For quite a long time we have been discussing how to improve the survey experience in UserReport. The overall objective was to make it faster and and more user-friendly for the participants to fill out the online survey.

Old habits and conventional wisdom more or less guaranties that surveys are too long and boring. Too many questions, too much text and too many answer options.

The reason is that most people still design surveys like they did 30 years ago when surveys were printed on paper and mailed with snail mail to each of the participants. Every piece of paper added to the envelope would increase postage cost – thus all kinds of techniques were applied to keep cost down.

Small print

Thin paper

Long surveys

Multiple choice questions

Matrix questions

Unfortunately (for the users) this behavior have survived the internet revolution. It has even been worsened by the fact that long and boring surveys cost next to nothing to create and distribute on the Internet.

That is why UserReport has come up with a new design that we are convinced will bring the online survey experience into the 21 century. In our opinion, we have managed to take the survey experience to a whole new level with the new interface. We have redefined the ‘essence’ of making an online survey.

Reduced length with a better user interface

The new online survey experience is closer to a QA system, than a traditional survey. Only one question is presented pr. interaction. Answering a question automatically equals ‘move to the next question’. Paging is a thing of the past.

Questions are twitter-like. They should be short and precise. Number of answer categories are limited. If you need to ask multiple questions – they should be asked as ‘multiple’ questions, not as big grids, matrix views or lists. We are fooling no one with these artificial survey constructions.

Sharing results with participants

Most users participate in the surveys because they want to make a difference. They want their opinion to be heard – their opinion to matter. But most of the participants in a survey also have another thing in common. They are also curious about the results.

UserReport wants to reward people that take the survey, by offering them a glimpse of the results. Not after they have completed the whole survey, but as part of the survey experience. We want to share results every step of the way, to encourage people to keep answering questions. One answer is awarded with one result. Participants can effortless move from question to question, without caring about the results – but they can also review the results every step of the way – without having to interact with the survey interface.

However, to avoid users getting full data – the shared results only consists of data from the last 50 answers. Webmasters may disable the sharing of results.

Reduced survey length by random rotation of questions

The concept of a serialized survey is also broken down. A problem we have been facing is that web masters have a hard time redefining surveys when they need to gather new information. Because after a certain number of questions, the survey get to long. And every time you want to add something, you need to remove something to keep the length down. Removing something breaks historical data-series which also must be considered.

In other words, making changes to an already running survey requires thought and attention.

UserReport makes it more simple.
Try to forget the concept of a survey as you know it. Surveys are still suffering from the constraints imposed when a survey was something printed on a piece of paper. Instead, try to imagine a survey as a long list of questions you would like to know the answers to. Sort of a ‘Questions and Answers’. Is the sky blue? How high is a mountain? etc.

What UserReport users are ultimately looking for is answers to their questions

With the new UserReport online survey, you don’t really build a survey as a traditional serialized sequence of questions. You just define questions you would like answered. Nothing else. The UserReport system then dynamically builds a custom survey for each and every visitor. Making sure you get enough answers to each question by using random rotation of your questions. No survey will be longer than 23 questions. By keeping the surveys short, precise and interesting we reduce drop-out and respondent fatigue.

But please try it out for your self.

Heavy users of the Feedback Forum have requested a new feature that enables them to merge two or more ideas from the Feedback Forum into one.

This ‘idea merge feature’ has now been released!

Websites that get a lot of ideas in their Feedback Forum sometimes get similar ideas from different users. Similar ideas often get posted because users don’t read all ideas in the Feedback Forum or because the user wants to describe the ideas differently than the ‘origional’ idea on the subject. From the Feedback Forum admin area you are now able to merge such similar ideas into one ‘new’ idea.

When a new idea is created by merging two or more ‘old’ ideas, the new ideas automatically gets the total number of votes from the old ideas. The new idea also keeps all the comments from the old ideas. When ideas are merged into one you are able to select which of the origional ideas that should be used as a ‘master’ for the new idea. The new idea ‘inherits’ the titel and description from the selected master but may also be edited further if needed.

We are happy to announce that it now is possible to export a beautiful pdf export containing all your results into one pdf-file.

We have created a full report that is fully customized with your logo and colors and contains all relevant slides with satisfaction scores, demographic profiles, feedback summaries etc.

It is perfectly suited to be shared with your colleagues or your maybe your boss? (he will hardly notice you haven’t made the report yourself).

How to get started?

Go to your dashboard, open the ‘export’ menu and select the ‘export report’ link. Now you just need to decide if you want a ‘regular’ report describing the results from a specific period of time? Or if you want a comparison report, that compares the results from two different time-periods.
